Building and Renovating

Why do I need a building permit?

Building permits allow your municipality to protect the interests of both individuals and the community as a whole. By reviewing and approving building permit applications prior to the work being done, the municipality can ensure that buildings comply with the Building Code, the local zoning by-law and other applicable legislation.

When do I need a building permit?

You must obtain a building permit prior to:

  • the construction of any new building over ten square meters in area or place of another structure, such as a mobile home, on your property
  • making renovations or repairs or adding to a building
  • changing the use of a building
  • excavating or constructing a foundation
  • constructing a seasonal building
  • undertaking work regarding the installation, alteration, extension or repair of an on-site sewage system

Contact Town Hall if you have any questions about when a building permit may be required.
